Truly Moving.

The night before the burial of her husband’s body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of “Cat,” and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. “I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it,” she said. “I think that’s what he would have wanted.”

I’m not posting this as some kind of propaganda to end the war. Nor is it a photo meant to inspire us to keep fighting. Truth is, war is the last thing I think of when I look at this photo.

The first thing I think of, is Love.

Stairwells

It’s finally here.

I’ve known Kina over the last 3 years, dating back to well even before her win in the Crash The Superbowl competition back in 2008. And even though she won a record deal, she turned it down in favor of taking control of her own music and her own style. And now, it’s finally paid off. I’m so proud of her. My only little bit of sadness is that I no longer get to keep her music to myself. Then again, I never did, always handing out cds to friends and bringing them along to shows, placing her stickers wherever I could, and directing people to her Youtube videos. But I guess I mean that personal friendship I have with her now has to put a bit to the wayside due to the fact that she’s got so many more fans now. She knows I’ve been her fan longer than most others can claim, and that’s all I need :) So check out her music if you haven’t already! And support her by buying a cd, because she didn’t pour all her talent and time into it for nothing! www.kinagrannis.com, or just click the above image.

I'm doing the Kina, she's doing the Tim, and there's some weird girl next to us =P

I’m taking baby steps for now. Just because you don’t forget how to ride a bike doesn’t mean its going to be easy even if you haven’t ridden one in years.

Roadtrip Day 2: Santa Barbara Redux and Day 3: PCH

So day 2 was filled with going to the Santa Barbara Zoo, and visiting the Fisherman’s Wharf, complete with a skate park:

Later that day I’d end up meeting with Danae and going salsa dancing, but alas, no pics of that :(

Day 3 pretty much consisted of driving down the wonderful PCH, seeing lots of beautiful plants, animals, and cliffs along the way:

I’ve still got plenty more photos to share, and plenty of stories to talk about, so stay tuned!

Today, We Celebrate Our Independence Day!

I just wanted to wish everyone a wonderful and safe Independence Day weekend! To celebrate, I just wanted to share one of my favorite speeches from the greatest 4th Of July themed movie ever, Independence Day :)

Doesn’t it just make you want to go out and shoot some aliens in the face? I know it does for me. And you can be sure I’ll be watching this movie tonight! Have fun everyone, and be safe!

Prep, Prep, Prep!

So once again I haven’t written in a while, but I’ve just been so busy these past couple of weeks trying to tie up loose ends, work my butt off to make as much extra cash as I can, and maintain my car. I’m leaving Southern California for a while.

Intended destination: Bellingham, Washington. When will I get there? I have no idea. But I’ve got 3 weeks to do it. And there will be plenty of stops along the way.

First off, let me introduce my best friend and only companion during the whole trip:

wpid396-DSC0004-2.jpgwpid398-DSC0002-2.jpg

Meet my car, a 2000 Nissan Altima, who I lovingly call…. “Car”. I’ll be driving in it, singing in it, eating in it, and sleeping in it for the next month. I’ll be meeting lots of old friends and meeting new people all along the way up, but she’ll be the only with me the whole way.

So what do I plan on doing? Well, everything really. I’ve always wanted to go to the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz, go whale watching in Santa Barbara, visit Alcatraz in San Francisco, explore the Mountains of Yosemite, and view the giant trees of Redwood. I’ll check out the Nike Factory in Oregon, photograph Glacier Mountain, learn the history of the Oregon Trail, sail down the Columbia River, and kayak the Oregon coast. I’ve already visited the Space Needle, but I want to really, really get to photograph it this time. I want to visit the very first Starbucks, and watch the flying fish at the Pike Place Fish market. Mt. St. Helen has always intrigued me as a volcano, and heck, I might even possibly(!), just maybe, go to Forks, Washington just to make all the Twilight fans jealous.

I want to do my best to meet the locals, and get to know how life is outside of the busyness of LA County. Hole in the wall restaurants will be my friend, and the local dishes are waiting to be eaten by myself. I can’t wait to just learn to relax, and enjoy the ride :) . And of course, I’ll be documenting it all for everyone, and for posterity.

wpid400-DSC0008.jpg

This is almost all of my photographic equipment. I’ll be taking it all with me. For the gearheads, here’s a list of what’s in the bag:

  • Nikon D200 (being used to photograph the bag)
  • Nikon D70s
  • Nikon 18-70mm 3.5-4.5 lens
  • Nikon 50mm 1.8 lens
  • Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 lens
  • Tokina 11-16mm2.8 lens (used to photograph the bag
  • Nikon SB-800 flash
  • Nikon SB-24 flash
  • 2 white shoot through and 1 silver umbrella, all 43″
  • 2 Cybersync Receivers and 1 Transmitter
  • 2 light stand adapters
  • Manfrotto Monopod Head
  • Manfrotto Monopod (strapped to side, shown at the top)
  • Gary Fong Lightsphere (under 50mm lens)
  • bungee cords, sync cords
  • too much other stuff to list

So basically, I want to photograph everything. People, places, food, houses, trees, mountains, rivers, etc. You name it, I’ll probably end up shooting it.

And I’ll literally be living out of this suitcase:

wpid402-DSC0010.jpg

If I lose it, I’ll be naked and not so fresh and so clean for the rest of my trip. That black book on the right is actually an album, given to me by Deejae. I’ll be using it as a scrapbook for the whole trip.

I can’t wait for Monday.

My Week In Pictures

Although my week has been busy, and I have lots to talk about, words escape me right now during the early morning. So instead, I’m going to take a cue from one of my favorite sites, The Big Picture, and I’m going to once again photoblog my personal exploits throughout the week. Let me know what you think, I just might make this a weekly thing :)

The photos are best viewed when enlarged. To enlarge, simply click on the photo.

Going UP

carlandellie

I can only hope that if I get married, my marriage will be half as fulfilling in its entirety, as Carl and Ellie’s was in its five-minute span.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend :)
